A short week as I took ill on Thursday & Friday. I hate getting sick; that feeling of vulnerability hits you. I still managed to pack a few things in for the days I was in, though.
Work:
I drafted out a comprehensive High Availability and Business Continuity document, in preparation for being asked to produce one.
I completed a quick tidy up of IPs we have whitelisted on our Mongo API, then regressed three of them when my Terraform stopped working.
I spent some time researching upcoming changes to how Azure Virtual Networks are to be deployed with default outbound public access disabled. I wanted to see what impact it could have on us (none) by deploying this setting. We have routing intent configured on our VWAN, but it’s always worth checking.
I set up a brand new PoC Technical and Environment stack so we could test various things on the fly without messing too much with the other environments being used by our developers. With Terraform, I can fling this up and down when we need it.
We had a request to upgrade our Postgres instances from 16 to 17 sometime in the future. So with my new PoC environment, I tried this and found that the Terraform provider currently doesn’t support this version. So now I have another job to do: update the providers (when the new one is released)
Not work:
Kettles x2, Corex2, Grease The Groove x2, Run x1
Didnt feel like doing too much on Saturday as I was still shaking off whatever bug I had.
But I spent Sunday morning working at my allotment.
What I read:
Weak password allowed hackers to sink a 158-year-old company
Bourdain: In Stories | Laurie Woolever
What I listened to:
Head buried in BBC Sounds and Spotify playlists.
The 99% is a podcast that should be on everyone’s list. I’ve been listening for years. They recently finished a mega-series on Robert Caro’s biography, The Power Broker, which tells the story and influence of urban planner Robert Moses. These are some long-ass episodes (and I’m used to those from listening to Bandsplain episodes) that detail the chapters of the book with guests. It’s very entertaining, but you really need to find a job that will take a few hours to truly listen.
Substack posts:
And in my other life, I also write and have a Substack page that hosts all of that. I haven’t written much for a while on there, but posted this over a week ago. Enjoy.
